Small Adventures in Wood

In August 2022, after watching several YouTube videos, I remembered that I had a Dremel with a flex shaft in the garage. I began experimenting with power carving on the patio and turned out a few small wood spirits. With cooler temperatures approaching as well as the impending winter, I began to consider my limited indoor options. Hanging up the Dremel, I picked up an old knife and began my hand carving adventure. Countless videos and dozens of carving books later, I continue chipping away.

Individual and Unique

Nearly all the carvings are done using basswood. There are a few exceptions as you'll see when you scroll through the photos. Basswood is ideal for knife carving and nearly every one of my carvings is done with carving knives and palm gouges. While few of the ideas for these carvings are originally mine alone, all are carved by me. Because each piece is individually carved and painted, no two items are alike. I couldn't duplicate them even if I wanted to and that's precisely why I will never carve a chess set.
